Venerable Debongshi was born in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in southeastern Bangladesh. He spent his early life in India. After completing the Tripitaka studies for nine years at the Moanoghar Pali College, he has devoted his life to practicing Vipassana meditation based on the four foundations of mindfulness. For over thirty years, he studied and practiced Dhamma while training in two traditions, Theravada and Mahayana, particularly in Vipassana and Zen Meditation. In 1988, he had his ordination according to the Theravada tradition, and in 1998, he completed the 16th Mahayana monastic education curricula at the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order. In 1991, he graduated from the University of Dhaka with a degree in Buddhist studies. He studied psychology at the University of Oxford, UK, and earned a master's certificate in project management at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He is currently enrolled in MA in counselling psychology at Yorkville University.
In his quest for knowledge and public service, Venerable Debongshi traveled to many countries around the world. Finally settling in Canada, in 2014, he established the Dhammanjali Meditation Center with volunteers to incorporate his vision of serving humanity. Today, DMC is a unique multicultural center serving people from all backgrounds. Members benefit from DMC learning seminars, meditation programs, and other events which collaborate to develop harmony, universal peace, and collective happiness.
