Bhante Debongshi is a spiritual teacher who grew up within a richly multicultural environment that nurtured his early interest in meditation and profound spiritual inquiry, establishing a strong foundation for his lifelong dedication to spiritual development. He spent his formative years in India and later moved to Dhaka, where he completed nine years of rigorous Tripitaka studies. Following this foundation, he dedicated himself to Vipassana practice, deepening his understanding of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness.
Over the past thirty years, Bhante Debongshi has studied and practiced the Dhamma across two major Buddhist traditions—Theravada and Mahayana—focusing particularly on Vipassana and Zen meditation. He was ordained in the Theravada tradition in 1988 and completed the 16th Mahayana monastic education curriculum under the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order in 1998, demonstrating his deep commitment and broad expertise in Buddhist practices.
In addition to his monastic training, Bhante Debongshi pursued academic studies in Buddhist philosophy, graduating from the University of Dhaka in 1993 with an honorary degree. He further expanded his knowledge of psychology and leadership, earning an Effective Leadership through Emotional Intelligence certification from the University of Oxford in England. He also holds a Master’s Certificate in Project Management from the University of Saskatchewan and an MA from Yorkville University in New Brunswick, showcasing his diverse expertise in mental health and leadership.
Bhante Debongshi is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and is a professional member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). He has been recognized with the Mental Health Academy’s Lifetime Achiever Credential in Professional Development in Mental Health.
Throughout his career, he has served diverse multicultural communities across Canada and internationally. His more than three decades of spiritual journeying have helped bring the Dhamma to countless individuals around the world.
In 2014, Bhante founded the Dhammanjali Meditation Center (DMC) alongside dedicated volunteers to fulfill his vision of serving humanity through spiritual development and compassionate, long-term, holistic care. Today, DMC stands as a sanctuary of inner peace and a vibrant spiritual hub for people of all backgrounds. Its programs support adults, children, and families, fostering social harmony, enhancing mental well-being, and inspiring individuals to realize their highest potential.
